Hello again everyone. This month I’d like to introduce two sites that are really impressive. I’ve decided not to have a theme this month and instead look more closely at the great learning opportunities these two sites offer.

The first is WordChamp. When I first saw this I ran over and called a few other teachers to my office to take a look. It is a vocabulary learning site where you can try quizzes or use a page translating feature that allows you to have any English internet page translated into Japanese (and it also works in reverse and for many other languages). Now if you’ve used translation functions on websites before you probably weren’t impressed. Well, this is different. Give it a try right now. Not only does it give great definitions, it also will let you hear the pronunciation for most words as well. And learners who are registered and who pay a fee can even make their own online vocabulary notebook and quizzes from the vocabulary they select. Teachers can make quizzes and load them for their students if (and this is the problem) the students register and pay a fee. The fee is not that high, but requiring all students to sign up might be difficult at any school. But even without students signing up, there are lots of reasons for teachers to begin using this site. http://wordchamp.com/lingua2/Home.do

The second is My Pop Studio (http://www.mypopstudio.com/) which calls itself “a creative play experience” but it is a great place for young teenage girls (often called ‘tweens because they are between being children and teenagers) can learn media skills and English at the same time as they have a lot of fun. If you are teaching young teenage girls, this is a site that you should take note of. My Pop Studio was developed with the Media Education Lab at Temple University and it is a site that promotes media literacy by giving girls a chance to create music, edit a TV show, publish a magazine and reflect on the role of digital media in their lives. Girls can create their own pop star produce an online concert. They can also edit their own reality show or make their own celebrity magazine featuring themselves and their favorite stars. This is a great resource for media projects for young teenage girls. And it is completely free.

Well that’s it for this month. I wish everyone a nice summer and see you in September when I hope to be able to give you some information on how you can go back to school!
