This month in the Treasure Hunt we'll look at a few of the many new
web presentation tools that have appeared recently. These tools are
really versatile. You can make any type of presentation, often using
a combination of images, video, text, voiceovers or other audio, and
yes, PowerPoint slides. These presentations can then be viewed at
the site or embedded into a blog, a Moodle page, or really any website.
The first use that comes to mind is for instructors to create

The first time I heard the term "bot", it was used to describe the
non-playable characters in video games. Recently, however, there is
a new type of bot that is becoming more and more common -- the
chatterbot. A chatterbot is an artificial intelligence-driven character
you can "talk" to or chat with using your computer. There are now a
surprising number of these you can introduce to your learners, many
of which are free. They are safe and harmless and fun to push to the
linguistic limits. Most of the chatterbots require Flash plug-ins. Many
chatterbots only allow text-based chat but the ones below are all
speaking chatterbots with voices that are fairly natural.

Hello everyone and welcome back to the Treasure Hunt. Many learners,
especially in Japan, will tell you that their two biggest problems with
a new language are listening and vocabulary. This month we'll be
looking at some tools available on the Internet to help people learn
vocabulary better and faster.

Hello everyone and welcome back to the Treasure Hunt.
In recent years, there has been a definite increase in the attention
being paid to how the brain works and brain fitness. The starting point
was work done on brain placticity in the 60s and 70s that began to
suggest that the brain and the neurons that it consists of are not
necessarily fixed in number and destined to a slow and steady decline.
They can and do grow and develop as people use their brains. For
language teachers, particularly aging ones like myself who have started
mixing up the names of their children, this has implications that cannot
be ignored. The message on the sites below can help our learners
understand that serious effort can lead to serious results when it comes
to learning a language. It can be a very motivating message, I believe.

Sometimes it is good to stop and consider things. More than three years ago I started writing this column for the LET newsletter. Over this time things have changed a lot. I think that we can see a couple of distinct approaches to the use of the web with students in Japan over these last few years and I would like to look back this month at some of the best websites I know of for each approach.
