Hello to all and welcome back. This month the topic is interactive listening and games and I’ve got two sites to introduce. As regular readers know well, there are a lot of really great sites on the web with good listening content and interesting pre-, while-, and post-listening activities, the best being still Randall’s Cyber Listening Lounge (http://www.esl-lab.com/ ).
However, a lot of sites have begun to make greater use of interactive animations made in Flash (previously Macromedia and now owned by Adobe). Flash allows for the integration of animation, video, sound and learner controls, making it a wonderful tool for constructing learning activities that can be delivered over the web. The two sites this month feature lots of wonderful Flash activities.
The first one is Japan’s own NHK. There are many games to be found at their website (http://www.nhk.or.jp/school/game/). The games are made to provide a little extra fun for viewers of the Eigorian program but can be used by anyone. These games are very suitable for young learners and lower-level learners and the use of Japanese place names and items and people sends a nice message to learners, I believe.
The next is a site I just came across recently, though it must have been around for a while since they claim to have more than 600 audio clips available. The site is called Elllo (yes, that’s 3 ls) and it has interactive Flash activities, podcasts, songs with subtitles, and more. It’s a really great resource, though this site has more emphasis on natural language and is less controlled or structured than Randall’s Cyber Listening Lounge or other sites made by language teachers. http://www.elllo.org/index.htm
Well, that’s it for this month. See you in July again.
