CALL Bridges the World

The Japan Association for Language Education and Technology (LET) has been chosen to host WorldCALL 2008, to be held in August of 2008 at the Fukuoka International Congress Center and Fukuoka University in Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan. The first WorldCALL conference was held in 1998 in Australia and the second one in 2003 in Canada for the purpose of advancing our knowledge of using technology for teaching languages. WorldCALL is not only about CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning), but also includes a wide range of specialized fields that make use of media to teach languages, such as TELL (Technology-Enhanced Language Learning), and WELL (Web-Enhanced Language Learning). Somewhere between 400 and 600 participants from more than 50 countries are expected for WorldCALL 2008, including sponsored presenters from underserved countries, making this conference a fantastic opportunity to see how the whole world is using technology for teaching languages.

The host of WorldCALL 2008, The Japan Association for Language Education and Technology was established in 1961 as the Language Laboratory Association of Japan and has grown into a large organization whose members conduct research and help with the education of people at all levels of schooling, from kindergarten to university. LET has also been active in organizing international conferences in addition to its regular conferences around Japan. In 1981, in cooperation with IALLT in North America, LET hosted the first FLEAT (Foreign Language Education and Technology) conference in Tokyo. Subsequent FLEAT conferences were held on both sides of the Pacific. The second FLEAT conference was held in Nagoya, the third in Canada, the fourth in Kobe, and the most recent, in 2005 was held at Brigham Young University in Utah, USA. And now LET is looking forward to welcoming language and technology researchers and educators from all over the world for what is sure to be our biggest and most exciting conference ever, WorldCALL 2008.
