Hello. I hope everyone is doing well coping with the hot summer weather. This month I’d like to go back to listening sites. I think one of the best things about the web for students in Japan is the large number of great places where they can go to practice listening for free. Of course, the web has many places where people can find interesting listening. At YouTube, for example, students can find just about any type of content they want, including music videos, TV shows, movie scenes, and news videos. Recently, more and more of my students are spending time watching videos on YouTube, and I think this is a good thing. But sometimes I want them to practice listening with more structure and some support, and that’s where the sites I’d like to introduce this month can help.
At Lingual Net, well-known author and listening specialist Michael Rost is active in helping learners connect with interesting content. He calls his site “The most original and entertaining movie site for English language learners worldwide!” It’s little like YouTube for language learners. http://www.lingual.net/lingualproductitems/index.php
At Breakingnews.com students can listen to recent news articles complete with transcripts and language support, a very nice service which is very regularly updated. http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/
English Trailers has movie trailers with lessons to support English learning. Choose a trailer and watch and follow along with the transcripts. There’s a good selection and good support. http://www.english-trailers.com/index.php
And finally, for something more homemade, there’s Stone Soup. It’s a site where kids make and record their own stories. http://www.stonesoup.com/listen
