Happy New Year everyone. This month I have another list of
different sites. They are interesting things that I found
out about in the last few months but that didn’t fit into
other columns.

First up is something that is hard to classify. It is more
of an idea than a site, and to be honest, I have not tried
to use it with my own learners. I just know that it is very
simple and emotionally powerful. It is called Dear
Photograph. It is a collection of photos uploaded by many
different people. They are all photos of old photos taken in
the same location as the original. If that seems hard to
imagine, just visit the site and you will immediately
understand. The images are wonderfully evocative and I think
having learners try out this new form of art could be an
excellent lead-in to a writing or speaking task.

The next site caught my attention with its title: Books
Should Be Free. It contains a large selection of audio books
of titles that are now in the public domain. There are no
recent best sellers here, but tons of classics. Most are in
English and recorded by volunteers, but other languages are
also available, including German, French, Spanish, and
Portuguese. All can be downloaded via iTunes, or in M4b or
Mp3 formats. http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/

The BBC’s recently-launched Adult Learner site is a great
new resource. You can use it to learn languages, including
English as a Second Language, or to improve your spelling
and grammar. But there are also other things to learn (while
you learn English at the same time!), including gardening,
cooking, or first aid, among others. The site is new and
growing. http://www.bbc.co.uk/learning/adults/

YouTube has recently launched a new education site. It is
not very useful as it is right now, but it could become a
great resource. Many schools block YouTube at present, and
this new site might be a way of getting around that
restriction if the administration can be convinced that it
is “safe” for learners to visit. http://www.youtube.com/

That’s it for this month. Have a great 2012 everyone!
